$21,000 to Commemorate 21 Years of Golf

The Dawn of Hope Golf Classic took its 21st swing at enriching lives in Northeast Tennessee. On August 18th, fifty two teams and forty volunteers came together at the Johnson City Country Club to display their support of adults with intellectual and development disabilities for the 21st annual Dawn of Hope Golf Classic. Bud Dugger, a participant at Dawn of Hope and honoree at the tournament kicked off the festivities by hitting the ceremonial tee shot.

There was an overwhelming response this year from sponsors and players which resulted in more participants, support and money raised than the previous year. The tournament was a great success with 104 players and netting over $21,000 thanks to the efforts of the tournament planning committee under the direction of Jacob Higginbotham. Members were Sam East, Ed Gibbons, Laura Hampton, Tom Harris, Tim Jones, Jim Jordan, Roger Kennedy, Frank McCarver and Robert Sampson, Jr.

Thank you to all our sponsors, players and volunteers for making this year’s tournament such a success. The Dawn of Hope is blessed to have your support. If you would like to share in next year’s celebration and sponsor the 2009 tournament, please contact the Dawn of Hope Foundation at (423) 722-1689.

The $10,000 Big Spring Break Drawing and Silent Auction winners are.....

Jana Banyas, John Bolton and Chris Vaughn, all of Johnson City, each left the 4th annual Big Spring Break Drawing and Silent Auction $3,333 richer splitting the $10,000 grand prize. On Thursday April 24, 2008 the Dawn of Hope Foundation hosted the exciting event at the Holiday Inn in Johnson City. The event was a great success raising over $25,000.

The format of the event was a reverse raffle with the last ticket drawn winning the grand prize and every 25th ticket drawn winning $150. The winners of the $150 dollar cash prizes from Johnson City were Barbara Mentgen, Mike Sluder, Lottie Ryans, Carol Ferguson and Cathy Ferro, Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Winn, Martha Enck and Ann Fleming. Other winners included Garland and Nancy Fields of Kingsport, Jack McClanahan of Abingdon, George and Jean Privon of Bristol, TN; John Autry of Birmingham, AL; and Dennis Vonderfecht of Jonesborough.

Everyone had a great time listening to the musical talents of Lightnin’ Charlie Dolinger as they awaited the announcement of the grand prize winners. Tarah Taylor, WCYB-TV5 Morning Show Co-Anchor, served as emcee of the event while Miss Historic Jonesborough, Megan Fox, kept the crowd energized. Dawn of Hope participants Donna Fulkerson, Arthur Nave and Randy Huffman helped with the event by drawing the tickets from the raffle drum.

The event would not have been possible without the dedication of the event’s planning committee. The members were Sam East, Duke Hall, Tom Harris, Jacob Higginbotham, Tim Jones, Jim Jordan, Harvey Justice and Rob Sampson. Executive Director Lee Chase praised members of the committee for their successful undertaking of the event. In addition, he thanked members of the Dawn of Hope Foundation Board of Trustees and the Dawn of Hope Board of Directors for selling 336 raffle tickets with the top seller, Harvey Justice, selling 67.

The night’s festivities included both a silent and live auction featuring goods and services from the greater Tri-Cities businesses. Proceeds from the raffle are allocated to pay for continued improvements to the Dawn of Hope at Stratton.
